    Today’s airships — like this one-sixth scale model called SkyKitten — are filled with helium, which does not burn. We changed the shape of the hull to make it so it sat much wider and flatter on the ground, and then we curved the top surface of the hull, and that creates aerodynamic lift. So you actually make this very large hull, which on conventional airships doesn’t do a lot for you other than hold the gas in.
    You actually make it develop aerodynamic lift as well, so it makes the whole thing more efficient. The final combination was basically we put the vector thrust on fairly early,we put the fly-by-light powered flight control system, which operates the control services down the back, but we found that the vehicle used to blow across the wind so we put a gas turbine bow thruster on and it was that combination of all those things working together that finally controlled this large vehicle and you could, it became quite precise, like a helicopter. But it still had to have a mooring mast which it hooked on to. So the next trick was to try and get away from the dependence on the mooring mast, and that’s where the hybrid air vehicle came in. And we basically wanted to make it so it could land pretty much anywhere and that meant, your hover cushion landing system applied to the machine, fixed that. And then the final trick was to, when you’ve got the hover cushion, you land on those, taxi to where you want to get to, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s water or marsh or snow or desert. And then when you get to the mooring point, you simply reverse the pitch of the blades on the hover cushion,and it’ll shut the machine down and lock it to the ground. And then you don’t need the mooring masts.
    Somebody once said to me it’s great, but why is it taking so long? We had to fix each one of these things, which sometimes involved you know, quite major technology developments in their own right. With its lighter-than-air technology, SkyCat’s heavy-lifting capabilities may revolutionize the freight industry.
