This particular air – assisted system also exhibits a wide hollow cone spray structure. A comparison of the injection rates between the pressure atomizer and the air – assisted injector is illustrated in Fig.33. The high – pressure atomizer generates a solid – cone spray at the beginning of injection, which then develops into a hollow – cone structure that eventually contracts or collapses to a smaller spray cone. The mass flux measurement results suggest that the interaction of the spray with the entrainment vortex contribute to the spray sheet dispersion and the final cone angle after collapse. the pressure atomizer was found to provide a constant fuel delivery rate over the main portion of the injection pulse, with the flow rate decaying only during the very last portion of the pulse due to the pintle closing

The central solid jet which was due to the sac volume inside the injector, which was inwardly opening type, was detected in the middle and lower bound in every picture. The solid jet would induce the wetting to the cylinder and piston bowl, affecting UHC(Unburned Hydrocarbon) emission. As the injector pressure increased, the intensity of Mie scattering image was increased. Spray penetration depth and width were measured from the Mie scattering image.
